This header image was taken facing south from within the Kīlauea caldera in 2017, before it's collapse in the summer of 2018. The lava falls in the background are a portion of the solidified September 1982 lava flow cascading down a circumferential caldera bounding fault exposing layered Keanakākoʻi ash beds. In places the flows are heavily altered by volcanic gases seeping up along the fault boundary. Now THAT is cool!
